Nephrite is one of two species referred
to as jade. (Jadeite is the other species.) More common than jadeite,
it occurs in all colors, often with a yellow tint, but green nephrite
is the most valuable. Trade names include Russian Jade, for a spinach-green
nephrite from the region of Lake Baikal, Russia, and Wyoming Jade, also
for a green-colored nephrite from Wyoming. (Another trade name, Indian
Jade, is not jade at all, but refers to a type of aventurine.) In addition
to Russia and Wyoming, nephrite deposits can be found in New Zealand,
Australia, Brazil, China, Canada, Zimbabwe, Taiwan and Alaska. Nephrite
is said to help balance and support the energy of the kidneys and lymphatic
system; to calm the nervous system and ease over-excitement; and to enable
the sharing of unconditional love with all beings. Mohs' hardness: 6 to
6-1/2.
