Gemstones Beginning with "M"

Mahogany Obsidian is a deep red-brown obsidian with black speckles. It is said to put people at ease with their sensuality. See Obsidian for more information.

Malachite is a vivid light green to black-green mineral with banding of light and dark layers in concentric rings, straight stripes or other shapes. It is sometimes translucent, but mostly opaque, and has a silky texture. Deposits can be found in Zaire, Australia, Chile, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Arizona. Malachite is said to increase personal power and self-confidence; to enable the following of one's true feelings of the heart; to act as a shield against electromagnetic disturbances; to support the blood and healthy circulation; and to improve resistance to disease. Mohs' hardness: 3-1/2 to 4.

Mangano Calcite is a pink form of calcite with thin white stripes. Mangano calcite is said to help initiate forgiveness; to help prevent nightmares; to help condone self-trust, which creates inner stability; and to help energize and heal the body. See Calcite for more information.

Milky Quartz See Snow Quartz

Moonstone is a feldspar named for its moonshine-like white shimmer. Its coloring can range from colorless, white or yellow to an orangish gold or gray. Lighter shades often produce a pale blue shimmer when turned toward the light. Deposits can be found in Sri Lanka, Burma, Brazil, India, Madagascar and the United States. Moonstone is said to help balance hormones, thereby easing feelings of stress and anxiety, and to increase creativity and enhance intuition. Mohs' hardness: 6 to 6-1/2.

Moss Agate is a translucent, colorless form of chalcedony with inclusions of dark green, brown or red minerals in moss-like patterns. While the name agate is generally accepted, the stone is not banded like most true agates. Deposits can be found in India, China, Russia and Colorado. Moss agate is said to have a calming and stabilizing effect on the entire system; to help recovery after a period of illness; to increase optimism and a sense of self-worth; and to ease emotional stress. Mohs' hardness: 6-1/2 to 7.

Mother-of-Pearl is the inner nacreous layer of a mollusk shell, which has an iridescent play of color. It is most commonly bleached to a milky white. Natural mother-of-pearl is a golden-brown shade, and mother-of-pearl from Tahiti is naturally dark, sometimes referred to as black lip. See Pearl for more information.

Moukaite is cloudy, striped pink to light red-brown jasper. Deposits are found in Australia. Moukaite is said to support the reproductive system and ease tension in the lower back. See Jasper for more information.
