Iolite, named for the Greek word for violet, is a transparent to translucent deep blue mineral. Sometimes referred to as water sapphire, it plays off the light, reflecting different shades of color within the stone, such as violet, yellow, light blue or gray. Deposits can be found in Myanmar, Brazil, India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and the United States. Iolite is said to enable inner visions and enhance the clarity of dreams; to soothe headaches, migraines and eye strain; to calm overwrought nerves and ease emotional stress; and to help cure insomnia caused by mental stress. Mohs' hardness: 7 to 7-1/2.
