Gemstones Beginning with "G"

Garnet is a group of differently colored minerals with similar structure and chemical composition. The main varieties include pyrope, almandite, spessartite, grossularite, andradite and uvarovite (see specific names in glossary for more information). The word "garnet" is derived from the Latin word "granatum," which means pomegranate. The different varieties of garnet range from opaque to transparent in colors from green to a dark brownish red. Garnet is said to balance the mind, the emotions and the body, bringing the heart into alignment with a higher expression of love; to help discard old ways of thinking and old patterns that no longer serve; and to open the way to abundance and vitality. Mohs' hardness: 6-1/2 to 7-1/2.

Goldstone is an artificial glass stone made using a technique, developed by the Miotti family in Venice in the 17th century, in which pure copper is melded into the glass to produce microscopic sparkling spheres. Some goldstone is an orange-yellow color, while other types have dark blue or violet background (known as blue goldstone). Goldstone is said to enhance inner journeying, bringing visions of other worlds.

Grossularite (Grossular) is a garnet whose color ranges from colorless to yellow, green or brown. It is the Latin word for gooseberry. Deposits can be found in Canada, Kenya, Mali, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania and Vermont. See Garnet for more information.
