Emerald, derived from the Greek word smaragdos, meaning green stone, is the most precious stone in the beryl group. The finest quality emeralds are a transparent, vivid bluish-green, but lower grades can vary from green to a slightly yellowish green, and from transparent to opaque. The emerald is also often clouded with inclusions. Deposits can be found in Columbia, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, Afghanistan, Australia, Ghana, India, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Zambia, Tanzania and North Carolina. Emerald is said to enhance wisdom and inner knowing and to enhance love in a relationship. Mohs' hardness: 7-1/2 to 8.
